East Meets West

We started the day by walking to the hotel next door to grab a shuttle.  Lot's of cool things to see around every corner.

Mermaid.

Jen was still waking up.

We took the bus from Cotai over to the older part of Macau.

We started on a walking tour in Senado Square.  You can really see the influence from Portugal on the architecture.

Saw some cathedrals and associated museums.  This is St. Dominic's Church.

A few reminders that we are in the Las Vegas of Asia.

And we saw a very old house called the Lou Kau Mansion built in 1889.

Beef jerky is a specialty there.

It was delicious.

We saw the ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral and associated museum.

Then we went to the Macau museum.  Macau was where Portugal first landed in Asia and one of the first places the Eastern culture met the Western culture.  The museum is a fascinating recount of the first meeting of these two cultures.

Macau was invaded and a single canon shot hit the Danish boat, sinking it and preventing a war.

This is a crypt for St. Paul's Cathedral.

This is the Na Tcha Temple--a world heritage site.

Lots of interesting looking buildings.

St. Anthony's church.

The cemetary was super interesting because most of the people were from the U.S., adding to the story of what it was like when West met East.

There was a fierce dog.

This was a weird ultra modern art museum built inside the mansion of a wealthy Portuguese merchant.

That's the dog.

They are playing mahjong.

Then we wandered around Camoes Garden.

And went to a street market.

He showed us how the heart still beats.

Then we had noodles at a restaurant that has been there since 1945.  It was very good.

Then we toured some of the Portuguese casinos and hotels.

There was amazing art in the lobby.

Saw the water show at the Wynn.

Looked around the MGM.

Headed back to our hotel area on the bus and saw the light show on the Venetian.

Then headed to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner.  We needed a break from Asian food.
